The Most Common Ways Squirrels Get Into Portland Homes (And How to Keep Them Out)

How Small an Opening Is Enough

Eastern gray squirrels, the species most commonly encountered in Portland residential neighborhoods, can fit through an opening as small as 1.5 inches in diameter. Once they locate a gap, they will chew and push at the edges to widen it. Wood, composite siding, foam insulation, and softer materials offer little resistance. A small imperfection along a roofline or around a vent can become a functional entry point within a short period.

The Entry Points That Come Up Most Often

Roof vents and attic vents are among the most frequently used access points. Standard plastic vent covers can be chewed through, and older metal screens often have rust damage or loose edges. If vent covers are not reinforced with heavy-gauge hardware cloth, they are vulnerable.

Fascia boards and soffits are also regularly targeted. These areas sit close to roofline tree branches, and the wood or composite materials they are made from are easily gnawed. Gaps in soffit seams—common in older Portland homes—are a particularly frequent problem.

Roof edges, dormers, and flashing create natural transition points where materials meet. Damaged, missing, or improperly installed flashing can leave gaps that squirrels can push through.

Utility penetrations—the areas where electrical conduit, plumbing pipes, and HVAC lines enter the structure—frequently have gaps large enough for a squirrel. These spots are easy to overlook and rarely checked unless someone is specifically looking for wildlife entry points.

Overhanging tree branches are the most common route squirrels use to reach a roof. A branch within a few feet of the roofline is enough to provide access. Trimming those branches back reduces the convenience of the route but does not eliminate the problem if entry points already exist or if squirrels find alternative ways up, including along fencing, downspouts, and utility lines.

Why DIY Sealing Often Fails

Homeowners who attempt to seal entry points on their own frequently miss secondary openings or use materials that squirrels can chew through. Foam sealant and standard caulk are not adequate to stop a determined animal. Effective exclusion requires identifying all active and potential entry points and using materials that resist gnawing—typically hardware cloth, steel mesh, or purpose-built metal flashing.

There is also a significant risk of sealing an animal inside the structure. A squirrel that is sealed in before it has exited will cause additional damage attempting to escape.
