The Most Common Ant Species in Portland, OR (and How to Identify Them)

Portland homeowners deal with ant problems throughout the year, and identifying the species involved is the first step toward effective ant control. Different ant species behave differently, nest in different locations, and respond to different treatment methods. Knowing what you are dealing with helps determine the right approach.

Here are the ant species most commonly found in Portland homes and properties.

Odorous House Ants

Odorous house ants are the most frequently encountered ant species in Portland. They are small, typically about one-sixteenth to one-eighth of an inch long, and range from dark brown to black. The easiest way to identify them is by smell. When crushed, they release a distinct odor often compared to rotten coconut.

These ants form large colonies and are drawn to sugary foods, though they will also feed on grease and protein sources. They commonly enter homes through cracks around windows, doors, and foundations, especially during rainy weather when outdoor food sources become harder to access.

Odorous house ants are persistent. They can establish multiple nesting sites within a single structure, which makes them difficult to eliminate without professional treatment.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are among the largest ant species in the Pacific Northwest, with workers measuring up to half an inch long. They are usually black, though some species in the region have reddish-brown coloring on parts of their bodies.

Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat wood. Instead, they excavate it to create nesting galleries. Signs of carpenter ant activity include small piles of wood shavings (called frass) near baseboards, window frames, or structural beams. You may also hear faint rustling sounds inside walls, particularly at night when they are most active.

Portland’s damp climate makes carpenter ants especially common here. They prefer moist or decaying wood, so homes with water damage, leaky roofs, or poor drainage are at higher risk. Left untreated, carpenter ant colonies can cause significant structural damage over time. Pavement Ants

Pavement ants are small, about one-eighth of an inch, and typically dark brown to black. They get their name from their habit of nesting in cracks in sidewalks, driveways, and building foundations. You may notice small mounds of displaced soil near pavement joints or along the edges of your home’s foundation.

Pavement ants are generalist feeders. They will eat sweets, grease, seeds, and other insects. While they are more commonly found outdoors, they regularly enter homes through foundation cracks and expansion joints, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and basement-level rooms.

Moisture Ants

Moisture ants are yellow to yellowish-brown and about one-eighth of an inch long. They are closely associated with damp or water-damaged wood and are sometimes mistaken for termites because of their nesting habits.

Finding moisture ants inside your home often points to a larger issue. Their presence typically signals an existing moisture problem, such as a leaking pipe, poor ventilation in a crawl space, or water intrusion around the foundation. Addressing the moisture source is an essential part of controlling this species.

Thatching Ants

Thatching ants are less common indoors but are worth knowing about for Portland homeowners with larger yards or properties near wooded areas. They are medium to large in size and often have a red or reddish-brown head with a darker body. They build conspicuous mound nests out of grass, twigs, and other debris, sometimes reaching over a foot in height.

Thatching ants rarely invade homes, but their mounds can damage lawns and landscaping. They can also deliver a painful bite when their nest is disturbed.

Why Identification Matters

Each of these species requires a different treatment strategy. Baiting methods that work well for odorous house ants may not be effective against carpenter ants, and treating for pavement ants outdoors calls for a different approach than addressing a moisture ant problem inside a wall. Misidentifying the species—or using the wrong product—can make the problem worse by causing the colony to split or relocate.
